1984 - Reading Between the Lines

1984, was written by Eton-educated democratic socialist George Orwell. Orwell was a great opponent to totalitarian rule and displayed this hatred not only in this novel, but in its sister novel, Animal Farm, which has already been reviewed. Orwell presented his book about the dangers of a totalitarian rule through the eyes of Winston Smith, a disillusioned Outer Party worker, who has seen through the lies that the Party has fed its citizens.

Technological Advances and Psychological Manipulation

Technology is used in 1984 to keep monitor all the citizens of Oceania. Throughout the country telescreens and hidden microphones are present. This limits the citizens freedom and the fear that they are always being watched will prevent the citizens from being themselves. In fact it is stated in the novel that the only time one is truly alone, is when he is sleeping in his bedroom. The large signs dotted around the city with the caption 'Big Brother is Watching You' serves to intimidate the civilians into believing that they are never alone and that they are not safe. Even the slightest facial twitch could alert the Thought Police of their hidden ulterior motives. Also, the citizens of Oceania would have to induct their children into an organisation called 'Junior Spies'. An organisation which encourages children to spy on their parents and, if need be, submit them to the Thought Police if the children believe that their parents have any resentment towards the party.

The Control of History

The main protagonist, Winston Smith, works in the Department of Records in the Outer Party. Due to his work there he recognises many of the lies the Party feed to the public and it is this accumulation of lies that led him to join the rebels. One such lie that it was in his line of work to alter an incredibly sensitive piece of evidence. Three Inner Party members had been accused of consorting with Oceania's enemy at that time, Eurasia, or was it Eastasia? However a photograph on the front cover of the Times (the official and most-likely the only newspaper in Oceania), depicted the three Party members posing for a photograph in Oceania on the same date that, in the trial, they were accused of passing sensitive information to Eurasia. Winston's job, in the Records Department was to alter the data to make it seem like the Party was in the right all along. Winston's job is of the utmost importance. By changing data, from pieces of evidence in a trial to a predicted decrease in chocolate ration, and preventing citizens of Oceania from keeping diaries, the Party controls history. The Party's great skill in changing historical data comes to light when Winston, in an effort to unveil the truth, seeks out trying to see whether life before the rebellion was better than the quality of life now. All books from before the date of the rebellion had been destroyed and the only records about life before the rebellion had been published by the Party and was heavily biased an unreliable. Desperate for the truth, Winston heads out into prole quarters, hoping to find somebody to help him on his quest but he is unsuccessful. Realising the full power that the Party has, Winston Smith is close to surrendering.

Physical Torture

The price for disobeying the Party is physical torture. However as O' Brien, Winston's torturer repeatedly stated, the Ministry of Love's purpose was not to exterminate troublemakers, but to convert them. By using sophisticated instruments of torture the Party can alter reality, ultimately forcing Winston to believe that 2+2=5.

My Favorite Book - 'Fortunate Life' By A B Facey

Is it just an act I have developed or is it nature taking its course?

At the age of only eight years, I started reading books ranging from short stories books, poems to biographies. I developed this norm from my young age to date and my conclusion is that books are our best friends. Books give us enjoyment, a deeper intuition on the mind and a spirit of nationalism. How does one make meaning of life, if I may ask? A major contributor is reading real life experiences of others in books. Do you read other peoples real life experiences from their writings? There is a wide variety of real life experience books on offer and it's your choice to determine what you want to read. I have read many interesting books in my life, but the one book I will keep repeating to read is 'The Fortunate life' by A.B. Facey.

This book is a true inspiration and guide in my life. Sometimes I build up feelings of giving up in some hard situations I face. However, when I remember words from this book, I get encouraged and find the inspiration to overcome the hardships and challenges I am experiencing.

Bert Facey, the author; began keeping notes about his life and eventually compiled them chronologically into this book. He introduces his life as an ordinary life, but his story reveals a hero of the impossible odds. At only the age of eight, He got a job as a farm worker robbing him of his childhood especially due to the harsh situations he faced at this farm. His employer subjected him to slavery like conditions combined with violence and physical beatings that left him scarred on his back. The scars remain a bitter reminder of the slavery to date.

He was not to give up his destiny, in spite of the challenging situations he was facing at this time and so he decided to escape. This he did by walking for over twenty miles through the bush and luckily found foreign settlers who had camped in the bush. It was amongst the settlers that he met his mother who had abandoned him and his siblings while they were still young after she went to stay with her elder siblings. His joy was short-lived however, as after a short while of staying with his mother in his new home, she died of a stroke.

Facey braved on and joined the Australian Imperial Force and fought during the Gallipoli campaign. Much of his autobiography is filled with horrific moments he endured during his mission in the Gallipoli campaign. Gallipoli campaign was a debacle where many people died but Facey survived even after a bomb exploded near him leaving him confined to a wheel chair for the rest of his life. According to Albert Facey, he then suffered many health complications through out his life, because of war related issues. He lived with old bullet wounds, heart problems and ruptured spleen but he never gave up on life.

According to this book, the writing is not all flowery or lyrical; the man who tells a real life story and uses tense emotion in areas such as loneliness in the bush, his horrific moments in the war and affection for his wife and children. This is a story that teaches endurance, perseverance and positive attitudes in times of hardship.

The Angel Inside - Follow Your Passion - Book Review

When The Student is Ready, The Teacher Will Come

The Angel Inside, by Chris Widener.

How many times did you hear this saying and somehow thought you can prove this theory wrong. Well, I am a master, no I was a master of trying to beat the odds, bend the rules, and outsmart the world for a long time now. My thoughts were, since I have been sent to Earth, and I always felt there must have been a reason, I needed to "fix" it. No, it does not work like that. As we only can affect a little area of the time and space, thinking that I could have accomplished the work of Source, whom I elected to call Good, was - if nothing else - egoistic and infantile.

I like reading Chris's books for two reasons. First, he carries on the teachings of my idol, Mr. Jim Rohn and second - I love his style. Everything he writes feels like a breeze. While reading The Angel Inside, I was in Italy, I felt the breeze, I smelled the food and the flowers, I saw the atmosphere and the spirit of the moment. No, I never went to Italy (yet) but the picture of a young man looking for answers to his life questions woke up my imagination. I saw the ancient ruins, laid back European life style, warm and colorful fields of Italy. I felt that proximity of Thomas' (main character) to the past will help him understand the law of nature more than the busy streets of America.

The book represents a short story with a monumental, long-lasting and profound meaning, which I will try to bring up here. It will serve no justice to the book or the author, but I hope it will make you pick up the book and dive into the learning and indulge yourself in the mastery of life. Or maybe you will also decide to visit this hub of culture, Italy?

There is an Angel Inside of everyone. Just as a side note, there is size six in everyone, so for those who need help, find a parallel route and go for it. Every person has all what one needs in life. We brought it with us. What is important is the realization of our education day in day out. And I am not talking about a formal education. I am talking about listening with and to your heart and asking yourself - how will this day change my life?

A young student visiting Italy meets by chance a man who gives him life lessons.

1. Man looks on the outside, God looks on the inside. What are you good at? How do you use it?

2. You have the power to follow your passion. Do you follow your passion or do what others expect you to do? Create a life you desire. Your passion will lead you to success.

3. Be confident. If you wish to achieve, demonstrate confidence (self-faith).

4. Beauty is in the details. If you work in the area of your passion you work out the details, otherwise you don't care and ignore details.

5. Your hand creates what your mind conceives. People live in either mind or hand world. True accomplishment requires both.

6. Planning is important. Move fast, but not too fast to and do allow for preparation.

7. Action is a beginning of accomplishment. Every success starts with one swift swing.

Nothing happens overnight. Each process requires certain steps which Chris describes as chipping away, sculpturing, sanding and polishing. Success takes time. Find passion, Give it time. Life is a process and progress. One cannot just jump over, skip steps. Whatever you do, look at the nature. We are part of the nature. It takes four seasons to complete the nature life cycle, it takes nine months to develop a fetus. What makes us think we can do it better and quicker?

Enjoy the reading!

Be am amazed with the value of experience that comes from a simple heart to heart conversation. Yes, when the words are missing, hearts talk. Breathe in the magnificence of life and breathe out the passion for love so others can be poisoned with it.
